Social elite flock to ArtHamptons fair

The ArtHamptons fair drew 2,000 of the East End’s art-world and social elite to a tented pavilion on the Bridgehampton estate of Maria and Kenneth Fishel on Friday night.

Many guests made a beeline for famed photographer Barry Seidman’s “Wine Collection” — an interpretive, sexy homage to vino that sold out at fairs including Art Basel Miami and Artexpo earlier this year. (more…)

Following record attendance at last year’s eighth edition of Art Hamptons, expectations ran high at this year’s edition.

Taking place in Bridgehampton, the fair attracted swaths of well-heeled visitors from around the region, and the so-called secondary home community—wealthy New Yorkers escaping the sweltering city over the summer months—was out in force.

This summer marks Art Hamptons’ first under new owners Urban Expositions, who also oversee SOFA Chicago and Art Aspen. The fair was the region’s first. Not much has changed with Urban at the helm—around 70 percent of participating galleries are returning exhibitors—but there’s been a little tweaking, such as a new logo, website and a move to the last week of June from the second week in July. The name sounds local, but Art Hamptons has become an international event.
Now in its ninth year, what started out as a small community art fair has grown into a giant expo, drawing exhibitors from all over the world and attendees numbering into the thousands. Last year’s fair was the biggest ever, with a record-breaking 4,000 guests arriving for the opening night reception and a total of 15,000 participants who showed up during the span of the show’s four day run. The Hamptons art season kicks into full gear early this summer with the return of Art Hamptons, the region’s longest-running fair, slated for June 23 through 26 in Bridgehampton. Now in its ninth edition, the fine art fair attracts more than 70 exhibitors, including the local Karyn Mannix Contemporary, New York– and Paris-based Galerie Bruno Massa, Cuba’s Galería Habana, Istanbul’s Merkur, and New York’s Emmanuel Fremin Gallery.

Arrechea in Havana. Alexandre Arrechea’s first solo exhibition at Galería Habana, Jerarquías negadas (Denied Hierarchies), opened late last month. Red Bull Studios (220 West 18th Street) has the first U.S. solo show, “We All Love Your Life,” by the London-based artist George Henry Longly opening on Thursday, June 9, 6 to 9 p.m. and on view until the end of July. The immersive installation covers two floors, and visitors will experience a series of “disorienting, obliquely formal and technological reference” including: outer space, reality television, surveillance and exhibitionism. Art Hamptons has announced its program details for the 9th edition of their international contemporary art fair.

Beginning Thursday, June 23, in Bridgehampton, Art Hamptons will take place on the private estate grounds of Maria and Kenneth Fishel located at 900 Lumber Lane and Schuttle Hole Rd. A private opening night preview is scheduled beginning with a ribbon cutting ceremony with Marion and Samuel Waxman of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation. (more…)
